Favourite January Races

Get inspired and motivated this January with our selection of our favourite races/events close to home.

Tom Brennan Memorial 5k.

The first race of the year is on January 1st, and despite the New Year celebrations it still draws a big crowd. 12 o’clock on New Year’s Day sees all the Lord Mayors Five Alivers & New Year Resolutioners meet in the Phoenix Park for the first run of the year. With the Lord Mayor initiating the proceedings there’s an air of anticipation to get the start of the running year underway.

This relatively flat route (given that you are in the park), comprised of 2 loops of 2.5k, a great start to your year of running.

The 5k course is ideal for those who need to be back on the sofa by early afternoon for some much-needed post NYE relaxation. The run includes a technical race t-shirt that can be worn with the statement ‘this is what I’m going to be doing this year’.

Pre Raheny Run Jan 2015

The Raheny 5 mile is a great way to keep you focused for the month of January.

Its a great way to keep motivated during those dark wintery evenings and a great stepping stone for anyone who wants to move upwards from 5k towards the 10k later in the spring.

It is a well organised race with number collection in the schoolhouse in Raheny over race weekend. The Race takes place on the last Sunday in January and has a 2pm kick off. There are bag drop facilities at the GAA club in Raheny with proper toilets and changing rooms if required.

The route is relatively flat with just 2 inclines. The first lap is around St Anne’s Park and out past the Red stables before heading along the coast and back up towards Raheny village. The finish line is deceiving as you can hear it before you see it and you have to do a loop of small park before coming in to the waiting crowds.

The highlight of this race is however the goody bag and small plaque you receive at the finish line. It is well worth the entry fee and would be one of the best goody bags of the year with a months supply of chocolate. After being so good all of January its the least you deserve.

Before the adult race there is a children’s race of various distances depending on age for our aspiring chicklets.

You can register here for the Raheny 5 mile.
